St Annes Pier
It looked like there would be a reasonable sunset last night, so we went around the coast to St Annes to try and capture it by the pier. Unfortunately when we arrived the cloud had settled in masking out the sun. I took apicture anyway and then fiddled about with it a bit in Photoshop.

I think the cloud adds character and makes it more interesting than a sunset shot.
Les Auld: it certainly makes a change from a sunset, thanks Martin.
Sun? What`s that? LOL! We`ve had skies like that one for a week now....typical Glastonbury weather. As for the photograph, it works so well. Capturing bad weather in black and white just seems to be the perfect medium. I love the way the buildings stand out against the sky. (:o)
Les Auld: The strange golden orb had been in the sky for quite a while, until I got the camera out that is. Still the end result is not too bad, thanks for the comment.
Can you share your Pp conversion Les?? Trying to find a method that gives a platinum print look!
Les Auld: Sure can Max. The initial picture was generated from three RAW images using Photomatix and saved as a TIFF. Then imported into Photoshop and cropped.
I used levels and curves adjustment layers to get the image looking more or less right then converetd to B&W using a Channel Mixer adjustment layer. This layer was then reduced to abot 90% opacity to bring back a bit of colour. Finally I put a Hue/Saturation layeradjustment layer on the top of the stack to fine tune the image. Hope that is of interest. Thanks for the comment.
That is very cool, Les! It almost looks like a toyland or a movie prop.
Les Auld: Thanks Ginnie, come to think of it, it does look a bit toylike, never noticed before.
Very cool image Les, like it.
Les Auld: thanks, appreciate the comment.
Great place. Fantastic desaturation and tone.
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment, appreciate it.
I love what you have done to this, it's so different to the usual images you see of the pier. Lol, I live just down the road and you came all the way round from Southport and took this last night!
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment. St Annes is a place I would gladly live in if I wasn't in Southport. We regularly take an evening ride there, it's just far enough away. Fish and Chips from the Chippy in the town and eaten out of the paper in the carpark by Fairhaven lake whilst looking out to sea. A very pleasent way to spend an evenong.
Excellent composition and pp. The desaturated selective colouring goes with the mood of the picture.
Les Auld: Thanks Louis appreciate the comment.
I like this a lot. Cracking photo. All the best, Dave
Les Auld: Thanks david, glad you like it.
the selective colouring really lifts this into another class - beautifully done
Les Auld: Thanks Paul, pleased that you like it.
just read your pp notes to Max - I'll have to try that!
Les Auld: Hope to see the results soon.
What a stunning image! I like the colours, so perfect grey tones! This pier must be a very interesting place, looks just great!
Les Auld: Thanks Monika, appreciate the comment, one of the more intersting piers in the north West.
A look of an old postcard ! Very nice composition once again and great work on colors : Thumbs up !!
Les Auld: Appreciate the comment, many thanks Zeb.
Looks like the pier is sitting on a blanket of snow. Lovely shot.
Les Auld: Thanks Aussie, glad you liked it.
