The castle was built around 1230 by Llywelyn the Great as a Welsh castle. it was taken by Edward 1st  when he defeated Llywelyn the Last during the Welsh Wars in 1283 and he added to the building.

In the early years of the Fifteenth Century the castle was retaken by Owain Glyndwr during the last major Welsh rebellion against the English and then torn down and burnt.
