Built in 1884 the church, known as Gustav Adolfus Kyrka, has been at the heart of the Scandinavian community for over 120 years.  Before Gustaf Adolf´s Church, was built in 1884, one pastor had to visit all the incoming Swedish ships to lead services for the sailors. Tired of watching their minister hop from boat to boat, the seamen felt they should get a place of their own to worship and so the church was built on park Lane in Liverpool, not too far from the docks.

Today it is still active at the heart of the small local Swedish community,it is also the address of the Swedish vice-consulate in Liverpool! Unfortunately the Church of Sweden does not think so as it was announced yesterday that the church is to close by the end of 2008 as they wish to concentrate their work in the Americas and South East Asia. The Rector in London would then assume responsibility for all church matters.

The first Scandinavian settlers came to the area in the 9th Century and the traditional Liverpool dish of Scouse has its origins as lobskause. There are still several hundred Scandinavians in Liverpool with a thriving community.
