A Tale of Two Moguls

The ex London Midland Scottish Railway Ivatt 2-6-0 43106, known as the Flying Pig, is awaiting it's turn on passenger duties on the Severn Valley Railway. Next to it is the earlier Mogul, designed by Sir William Stanier, 42968, out of service during the SVR STeam Gala. A contrast in design styles with 43106 showing a distinctive American influence. It has been dubbed the ugliest British locomotive produced.

I don't think they were particularly ugly. now the Q1 freight locos....they were very ugly!

Les Auld: The Q1 was a unique product of wartime Bill, the Flying Pig was a product of someones strange mind in my simple view, however they were both products of their time. Thanks for the comment.

We never saw these Flying Pigs in our neck of the woods Les, I don't think we saw the Stanier moguls either. The Ivatt reminds me of the M&GNR which I would have loved to travel on
Les Auld: Mainly based in the north I think, with routes cross to the LNER. Thanks for the comment.
Looks fine to me ,got to agree with Bill on the Q1,thats a pretty basic design! Your usual high quality shot Les,a happy new year to you.
Les Auld: Thanks you Frank, I must admit that steam locomotives are my favourite subject. Thanks for the comment.
Excellent shot Les, the contrasts between the two are very interesting. I don't think I've seen 43106 but I did see a q1 and like Bill though it most unattractive.
Les Auld: The Q1 is a bit odd, I saw it at York a few years ago and have always considered it quite unique. Thanks for the comment.
Excellent shot.
Les Auld: Thank you John.
