photoblog image Lightning Sunset

Lightning Sunset

there was a night photoshoot at the Yorkshire Air Museum last Saturday and one of the stars for me was the English Electric Lightning F6 fighter. A Mach 2 plus single-seat, twin-engined, fighter interceptor, the Lightning was eventually phased out of service between 1977 and 1988.

Ironically the only kill attributed to a Lightning was a British aircraft – a Harrier pilot ejected and the pilot-less aircraft continued to fly. The order was given to shoot down the aircraft and the Lightning did this with speed and precision.

Great shot Les, it really suits these aircraft. I saw one do a display once, it was one of the best I've ever seen, its climb rate vertically was something else.
Les Auld: The only ones that can fly these days are in South Africa, a bit of a way to go I think. Thanks for the comment Brian.
