there was a night photoshoot at the Yorkshire Air Museum last Saturday and one of the stars for me was the English Electric Lightning F6 fighter. A Mach 2 plus single-seat, twin-engined, fighter interceptor, the Lightning was eventually phased out of service between 1977 and 1988.
Ironically the only kill attributed to a Lightning was a British aircraft – a Harrier pilot ejected and the pilot-less aircraft continued to fly. The order was given to shoot down the aircraft and the Lightning did this with speed and precision.
