150 Years of Trams on the Wirral

On Sunday the Wirral Bus and Tram Show celebrated 150 years of trams on the Wirral and 50 years of the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society, which is based in Birkenhead. During the day Trams worked between the Transport museum and Mersey Ferries, Woodside, whilst the buses operaed to various destinations on the Wirral.

It is claimed that the first street tramway system in Europe was in Birkenhead, horse drawn as there was no electricity back in those days.

Birkenhead Tram No. 70 arrives at Woodside Ferry whilst Wallasey Tram No. 78,  The last tram built for the Wallasey Corporation, runs along Shore Road from the Museum.

Les Auld: It was Chris, ship building was the premier industry back then. Thanks for the comment.

FABULOUS, Les. What a dream to ride in one of those. You'd sure hope the wind wouldn't topple them! I especially like the green one. smile
Les Auld: It is an experience never to be forgotten Ginnie, they did not call them boneshakers for nothing. Thanks for the comment.
