we hear so much about the royal navy we forget sometimes of the brave stuff the merchant navy did, a fitting tribute to them well photographed
Les Auld: Thanks you Derek, the Merchant service has tended to be overlooked.
The courage of the men on the convoys deserves to be remembered
Les Auld: And so it is Bill, but many years too late. Thanks for the comment.
Les, I can`t tell you how pleased I am to have seen this image. It is a subject close to my heart. http://gallaxy.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Lest_we_forget_/
Les Auld: I am pleased I could show it to you Rosalyn, your grandfather's story is one that should never be forgotten. Thanks for the comment.

Good stuff Les: anyone who reads about the convoys to Murmansk will know how brave these blokes were
Les Auld: Alistair Maclean's book HMS Ulysses gives quite a graphic description of the Russian convoys, freezing temperatures, wild seas, and the U-Boats. Not an easy life in any way. The merchant sailors really did have it hard. Thanks for the comment.

Les Auld: Thanks for the comment Linda.
I agree with the others, it is good to be reminded the navy isn't only a military organisation and hundres gave their lives on convoy ships.
Les Auld: Very true Brian, thanks for the comment.
A fitting memorial
Les Auld: It is indeed John, thanks for the comment.
