Ferocious Frankie

Operated by the Old Flying Machine Company, based at Duxford, Ferocious Frankie is a fine example of the P51-D Mustang. Built at the North American Aviation Factory at Inglewood, California it was accepted by the USAAF on 27/02/1945. One month later it was sent to the 8th Air Force, via Newark and Liverpool docks, providing fighter escort to US bombers over Europe.

Wow - what a ferocious machine Les. I think it was the introduction of these machines with their extended range & huge firepower that finally put paid to the Luftwaffe in Europe
Les Auld: They certainly had a hand in it Chris, they were known as "Little Friends" by the Bomber Crews as they could fly all the way to Germany with the bombers. Thanks for the comment.

Looks ready to bomb something or someone. But they would be plastics. Great shot.
Les Auld: Could be empty iron Louis, thanks for the comment.
I guess these were one of the last propellor driven fighters to be designed. A very purposeful looking beast
Les Auld: There were a few others Bill, this was designed back in 1942 for the RAF but by an American company.
