Arriving at Crewe

The second main-line steam special on Saturday was the Palatine from London Euston to Manchester, hauled by the A4 pacific 60019, Bittern. So a quick trip down the motorway to Crewe just in time to catch the train arriving there. Bittern has a second tender to carry extra water so reducing the number of stops needed for water.

The A4 was the perfect expression of steam power
Les Auld: I must admit to a preference for the LMS Duchess but the A4 is a close second, thanks for the comment Bill.

This actually looks like a forerunner of the bullet trains, Les. Very forward thinking!
Les Auld: The streamlining was a fine design, the fastest steam engine in the world is one of the same class of locomotive, thanks for the comment Ginnie.

A lovely picture Les. When I saw her hammering through Yatton en route for Dartmouth last week I confess I didn't notice the extra tender.
Les Auld: Thanks Chris it is a fine looking engine.
My favourite type of loco, too many years watching them at Hitchin station when I was young I suppose. I saw all the A4's according to my Ian Allen, 1958 edition.
Les Auld: I didn't see many of them back then nut they do have good lines to them. Thanks for the comment Brian.
It looks a beast Les..but a beautiful one..Well captured.
Les Auld: Great lines Ron, thanks for the comment.
I love the design of this engine Les - very streamlined - and you've done it proud
Les Auld: It does have good lines Pamela, thanks for the comment.
