The Roaring Monster Special

Just enough time on Friday morning to make the trip up to Preston to catch Britannia Class 70013, Oliver Cromwell, on the Roaring Monster Special before heading down to Somerset for the West Somerset Steam Gala.

The train is also known as the Cumbrian Mountains Express, operated by the Railway Touring Company, it runs from Crewe to Carlisle via the West Coast Main line over Shap and returns on the SettleĀ–Carlisle Railway.

The sound as she left was just superb with the exhaust note echoing back from the bridges and building of Preston.

Les Auld: Echoing from the rafters Derek, thanks for the comment.
Super shot Les...They are as popular as ever..lovely machines.
Les Auld: They deserve to be Ron, and it is a fine tribute to all the volounteers that worked on her. Thanks for the comment.
Great shot Les, I like the angle the fireman? is haging out to see ahead.
Les Auld: Making sure the track is clear I suppose Brian, Thanks for the comment on this and also for the comments on my Flickr site.

Les Auld: Where would we be without them Ginnie, thanks for the comment.
Superb!! This should be on a calendar or a jigsaw puzzle...I love it!
Les Auld: A superb engine completely at home in it's environment Bill, thanks for th comment.
Definitely one for the album, Les - wonderful old machine - I don't think the modern diesels will be lasting as long!
Les Auld: I suspect no-one will want to preserve the modern diesels either Tom. thanks for the comment.

Another cracking image, Les. The steam steam from the safety valves and around the buffer beam really makes this, as does the fireman(?) leaning out. I'll be around the West Somerset Gala, too!
Les Auld: Thanks Alan, it really does belong in a train shed like Preston.

There are some fine engines here on the WSR this week, weather could be better though.
I do love your railway shots Les smile
Les Auld: Thank you Pamela, I must admit liking taking them.
