photoblog image The Reality of a Steam Gala

The Reality of a Steam Gala

To get reasonable pictures at a steam gala you do need politeness, patience, position, and elbows to achieve your aim

The scene at the end of the platform, Rothley station on the great Central Railway as the crowds jostled and got in each others way as they tried to get a good picture of 70013, Oliver Cromwell as she left the station. I amd always amazed by the number of photographers who just barge around and get in the way of others at these events.

A fine collection of "anoraks" as I ever saw! Like you,, I get frustrated by the lack of thought shown by some people. I caught part of the West Somerset Railway's Spring Gala (not planned, just happened to be in the area) last year and that seemed to be rather more genteel.
Les Auld: I'll find out in a few weeks Alan as I plan to visit the West Somerset for the Gala, thanks for the comment.

This is a great study of people in action Les
Les Auld: Or, in some cases, in-action, thanks for the comment Chris.
Looks like a bit of a bun fight Les, might have to have a rethink on this one.
Les Auld: Not all are like this Michael, thanks for the comment.
It's actually a good shot of the atmosphere surrounding this event Les, although I must agree that some people don't always take note of where they are in realtaion to other photographers which can be irritating. It was like this at the end of Quorn platform on Saturday trying to get a good shot of the Jinty, needless to say I didn't.
Les Auld: Most people seem to wait until the last moment to try and get the shot, a bit of planning does seem to help. Thanks for the comment.
So you dont carry step ladders then lol...You have captured the atmosphere well Les. A great day out.
Les Auld: Step ladders - no way Ron, thanks for the comment.
You will have to use your elbows a bit more. It looks really well attended.Good shot of people doing their thing!
Les Auld: Elbows are important Linda, thanks for the comment.
