70013 waiting for the off

British Rail Standard Britannia class engine 70013, Oliver Cromwell, waits in the late afternoon at Loughborough Central on the Great Central railway for the signal to go with the travelling Post Office, the driver keeping a good look-out for the green amongst the smoke and steam.

70013 was one of the last locomotives on British Rail and pulled the 15 Guinea Special, BR's last steam hauled main line service  on the Manchester - Carlisle section of the tour on  11th August 1968, It also ahuled the 40th Anniversary special in 2008.

I must admit to forgetting just how good the GCR is, plenty of train activity and a great selection of locomotives.

"When the signals were green did you sit by the line
And watch for the fire in the sky
Then a scream and a roar and the shivering ground
And old Oliver Cromwell goes by
Did you fancy your hand at the throttle and brake
With the steam driven into your soul
Or to stand with the driving wheels under your feet
And shovel a mountain of coal"
