Steam on the Great Central

This weekend's Steam Gala was held by the Great Central Railway, they called it "Lostock and a Few Smoking Barrels" representing some of the types of engines that were homed by Lostock Hall shed near Preston, one of the last three locomotive sheds at the end of steam in 1968. Finally the shed closed on the 4th August 1968.

Seen here is Stanier Black 5 44767 at Leicester North station waiting to take the next train back to Loughborough. It is is an unlined dirty black finish as it has only just completed it's overhaul and has not yet received it's final coat of paint.

When you are tumbling out of your bed
You are not sure if you are dead or alive
and you make you way through the wakening day
And you climb aboard a black five

She goes hammering over the hill
And you are very near roasted alive
Like a hound of steel riding runaway wheels
There is a devil astride a black five.

There is always something special about these train pictures, especially with steam and chugging smoke. Great stuff.
Les Auld: Special indeed Louis, thanks for the comment.

A lovely portrait Les: I could drool over it for ages!
Les Auld: Thanks for putting that image in my mind Chris, thanks for the comment.
Super shot. Somehow the black 5 is the perfect example of a British steam locomotive.
Les Auld: Yet when I was a train spotter Black 5s were so common around here they were not worth a second glance once you had recorded the number. Only now can I see the worth and power of then. One of Stanier's best. Thanks for the comment.

What I especially like about train images like this, Les, is when the engine is alone with it's coal car (?) without all the cabins after. It's like the engine is really highlighted!
Les Auld: A study in power perhaps Ginnie, The coal car is called a tender over here and the cabins are coaches. Thanks for the comment.
A lovely shot Les.
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment Michael, appreciate it.

I always enjoy your loco pictures, Les (well, I enjoy all your photos, actually). You show them as living and working machines. Wonderful.
Les Auld: Thanks for the compliment Alan, I must admit trains are my number one subject so expect quite a few more this year.
Fine shot Les, I liked the way they had "weathered" this one.
Les Auld: It does look the part Brian, but I suspect it will be prettified soon. Thanks for the comment.
Les you have a great way of capturing these trains, another nice one, like the play on film words as well
Les Auld: Thanks Derek, glad you like it.
It's beautiful, Bravo!
Les Auld: Thank you Keith, appreciate the comment.
