photoblog image The Splash .....

The Splash .....

.... Or Perhaps the Slide

It was quite cold in Preston yesterday with the water on the base of the fountain frozen solid and the icicles pretty large. The only movement was the srpay towards the rear.

The statue is of Sir Tom Finney who played for Preston North End in the 1940s and 50s, one of the most complete footballers of his generation, spending his entire career at Preston until he retired in 1960. He was capped for England 76 times during his career.

The statue is based on a moment in time captured by a photographer during a game between Preston and Chelsea in 1956. The pitch was saturated and Sir Tom spashed through a puddle on the ground after a tackle.

In the background is the National Football Museum, subject of recent debate as it has been proposed that it be moved to Manchester for some strange reason.

This is a wonderful statue Les, dating from the days when the game was played simply for the love of it!
Les Auld: It certainly not for the money Chris, thanks for the comment.

Great shot. I can think of some photographic fun with the moving water and static ice.
Les Auld: So can I Louis, thanks for the comment.

Your POV, Les, is right on!
Les Auld: Thanks Ginnie, it was a bit cold kneeling down to get the angle though.
Brilliant Les. Funny but I got a book with great football photographs in and the one from which this statue is taken was in it, one of my favourites. I took me back to my childhood when I got a football annual for Christmas and inside it had the photograph of Tom Finney in a shower of spray and the caption read, 'Come rain or shine, Tom Finney's there'.
Les Auld: Happy to help with the memories Chad, thanks for the comment.

Lovely statue Les, those icicles and the frozen water make this picture seem really cold.
Les Auld: It was really cold Brian, thanks for the comment.
I first discovered the qualities of Tom Finney on the back of a cereal box back in the early 50's ... Things only got better after that.
