The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express

The CME ran between Manchester and Carlisle yesterday. headed by two Stanier Black 5;s, 45407 - The Lancashire Fusilier - and 44871 on it;s maiden main line run. They are seen here crossing back to the main line after being fed and watered at Carnforth station.

It was a cold, grey day with terrible light and standing in a biting wind for over an hour waiting for it to move might not have been the best of decisions, but the coffee and toasted tea cakes afterwards made up for it.

44871 was one of the last steam engines to run on passenger services back in 1968, heading the infamous 1T57 15 Guinea Express with 70013 Oliver Cromwell. At the end of her days she was allocated to Carnforth shed.

For the old Gricers the video below shows 44871 running light engine leaving castleton on its way to Carnforth to be readied for this run.

What a wonderful mish-mash of wires above and tracks below. The train itself is amazing.
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment Sherri, appreciate it.
This is a great shot Les. The treatment really works. And yes I have looked at the video...love the cat at the beginning!
Les Auld: The cat was grand Bill, and this worked much better in mono. Thanks for the comment.

Ahh yes Les - the perfect way to end the year!
Les Auld: Freezing your bits off on a cold station platform, perfect! Thanks for the comment Chris.

A superb shot, Les. It just shows how ugly, though, all that overhead stuff it! I love the trackwork, though.. a real boys trainset look to it! I enjoyed the video, especially the cat!

Happy New Year to you.
Les Auld: A very complex knitting pattern to get the wire effect Alan, the cat was really quite interesting. Thanks for the comment.
A great shot and video Les. With 70013 and 44871 now active on the main line someone will surely get them back together. The GCR are holding an 8 engine gala in January with a surprise loco to be announced, I just wonder.
Les Auld: Quite possibly back on the East Lancs Brian. The GCR gala looks pretty good so I will probably make the effort to visit this year, although with five galas on consecutive weekends starting the 23rd January will be quite a stretch. Thanks for the comment.
A maginificent beast. Happy new year Les.
Les Auld: And it's first time out for many years, thanks for the comment Chad, may you have a good New Year.
