A Room for Illusions

The small Concert Room in St. Georges Hall in Liverpool is a grand example of a Victorian Concert Hall and lavishly decorated in gold and red. In the past it was known as the Golden Concert Room and it was regularly host to Charles Dickens who held many of his readings there.

A balcony supported by caryatids runs round the room, although they look splendid and solid they are cast from Plaster of Paris so providing an illusion of grandeour.

The towering columns at the back of the stage are also not quite what they seem, they are made from Papier Mache and the view of the room beyond is a mere reflection of the concert room itself as seen in the mirrored wall.

Restored in 2000 it was eventually re-opened in 2007 and provides seating for 480 souls in the audience.

The art of illusion at its best, paper mache... unbelievable
Les Auld: At its best indeed Zed, thanks for the comment.
This looks an amazing room Les, particularly with that strange mix of building materials.

It's a movie scene missing only the actors. Beautifull shot and excellent composition!
