A Tough Little Boat

Smit is one of the two major towing companies operating on the River Mersey, the other being Svitzer.  The Smit Donau is seen here returning to Birkenhead docks after helping move the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Orangeleaf to Cammell Lairds Ship Repairers for refitting.

I may have said this before but tugboats are one of my favourite vessels. small tough and strong, a bit like the Dwarves in the lord of the Rings, they work hard on the river and they do seem to be enjoying themselves.

They size belies their strength, Les. Looking at the protection on the bow, I guess she does more pushing than pulling. The bridge has great visibility in all directions I see. Lots to enjoy in this.
Les Auld: The pushing bit is pretty important Alan given the rise and strength of the tides on the Mersey. These modern tugs do look very different to the older ones we used to have. Thanks for the comment.
We saw one of these on our trip, do they guide the ships up and down the Mersey.
Les Auld: Push, pull, tow and generally keep the river moving Linda, thanks for the comment.
Very powerful boats..I think they could be my favourites too Les.
Les Auld: Powerful and very nifty as well Ron, thanks for the comment.
I really like this shot Les, as you say they are real working boats. I like the ferry on the left as well, and all the background makes one feel out at sea.
Les Auld: Thanks Brian, appreciate the comment.
