Descending the Deep Mine

There are two tours at Llechwedd Slate Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Miner's Tramway and the Deep Mine. The latter is much the better of the two. You descend into the mine in a funicular railway and then walk through ten chambers to hear the story of the slate.

There are more than 25 miles of tunnel underground connecting slate chambers on many levels, although the tour is only about half a mile long. This is about halfway through the trip, the steep stairway on the right leads between levels. You can really feel the weight of the slate and earth above you here.
