Fort Perch Rock

On New Brighton sands, guarding the entrance to the River Mersey. Built in 1827 The fort was still a major defence for the port of Liverpool up to the Second World War.  During the war a radar station was installed and is believed to be the first in Britain.  The fort also had direction finders and loud speakers. The only time the guns were used in the Second World War was against a German U-boat in the Liverpool Bay.

Les Auld: One of the great inventions Zed, who knows where we would be without it today, thanks for the comment.
Good to see this bit of our history hasn't been knocked down Les.

I don't think I've seen this one, but it's so "English" isn't it, even without the flags flying.

I always wonder how they built things like this, with their foundations in the sea.

Good to hear this place was used, hopefully successfully.

Must try to remember to look up a bit more of the history of this fort
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment Ellie, there are some interesting exhibitions inside as well.
