photoblog image The Blackie

The Blackie

At the top of Nelson Street in Liverpool, next to the Chinese Arch, stands the Blackie, Britain's first community arts centre. Formally the Great George Street Congregation Church built in 1840 for the princely sum of £13,922, the whole of which was raised by the congregation in order to replace the earlier chapel that was destroyed by fire.

Interesting juxtaposition Les - fine example of styles rubbing shoulders in the City.
Les Auld: They seem to work well together though, thanks for the comment.

What a fabulous juxtaposition of architecture and color, Les.
Les Auld: Thanks Ginnie, just one of many that can be found in Liverpool.
The Chinese Arch and the Arts centre actually go together perfectly well but I am not so sure about the street furniture. Those lights and bollards are a bit iffygrin
Les Auld: Don't forget the dragons guarding the arch as well. thanks for the comment Bill.

Juxtaposition, contrast, unlikely bedmates - heck it makes a great picture.
Les Auld: Thanks Louis, glad you like it.
The great contrast makes a fabulous image!
Les Auld: Thanks Richard, appreciate the comment.
The East and the West together side by side, what a great piece of planning by somebody, it shows that things can be done sensibly after all.
Les Auld: The Chinese are held in great respect in Liverpool Brian, thanks for the comment.
