The Class 56 Diesel locomotive was British Rails second generation heavy freight engine of the 1980s. Introduced betewwen 1973 and 1986, a total of 135 Grids, as they were known, were built. Strangely enough the first 30 were built in Romania but sffered from reliability problems when they were introduced. the remaining engines were built in the UK by BREL at Doncaster and Crewe works.
56100 is seen here in Load Haul Livery not long after the privatisation of British Rail. Load Haul was later merged into the English, Welsh and Scottish Railway Company. It is currently in store along with many others of the class.
