Down at the docks
Birkenhead doocks still has a few old delapidated buildings left, these are opposite the wreck of the Sarsia
on East Float. The small building is dated 1864. The building in the background is the Central Hydraulic Tower and Engine Room, responsible for powering the original lock gates and pumps. It was designe by Jesse Hartley, architect of the Liverpool dock system. Apparently The design of the building was based on the Palazzo Vecchi in the Piazza Della Signori, Florence, rather a grand idea for a dock building.
