Stavros S Niarchos

The Stavros S. Niarchos is the first new tall ship built in Britain for over twelve years and at 59m is the maximum size for a brig, the smallest of the square rigged ships. It is operated by the Sail Traning Association and provides exerience for young people on it's many trips. The ship is named after the Greek businessman and sailor.

Seen here leaving the River Mersey passing the New Brighton Lighthouse at the start of the Tall Ships 08 Race. Aboard are 46 young volounteers learning the ropes during the trip.

Les Auld: Thanks Rosalyn, t'were a grand sight on the river.
Ha! After all my wrecks, it's nice to see a ship sailing!! That water does not look very welcoming, but your image is!
Les Auld: It was a touch choppy and the mud was being kicked up from the river bed. Thanks for the comment David.

reminds me of the pirates of the caribbean movies
Les Auld: Interesting reminder, thanks for the comment.
All three sail boat pictures are good Les but I like this one the best, the inclusion of the lighthouse is what does it for me.
Les Auld: Thanks Brian, it did make a change to photograph the lighthouse from the seaward side.
