photoblog image The Lower Lighthouse

The Lower Lighthouse

In Fleetwood, the last of my short series of pictures from that coastal town. Seen here with on of it's regular occupants and his can of beer.

This lighthouse was designed in 1840 by the architect Sir Decimus Burton, who was also rsponsible for much of early Fleetwood. The lighthouse is located on the seafront and the light could be seen from around 9 miles away.

Fleetwood is unique amongst towns in the United Kingdom as it was the only town that had three lighthouses. The Wyre light out in the bay, the Lower lighthouse and the upper, or Pharos lighthouse in the town. When approaching seafarers had the lights of the upper and lower light lined up correctly they knew they were in the right channel for the docks.

Good image I like the colour tone
Les Auld: Thanks vintage, a touch of desaturation with a light green overlay.

I've never seen a lighthouse like this, Les. It's WONDERFUL. I am such a glutton for shots like this!
Les Auld: It is a great shape isn't it Ginnie, thanks for the comment.
A most unusual lighthouse Les, unfortunately places like this are a magnet for people like the occupant you show here.
Les Auld: Very true Brian, useually there are more than one around here.

I like the desaturated tones in this - it has the look of a photograph taken some time ago. The man in the archway is a good touch. His white T shirt stands out well and he adds a sense of scale. I've been away, but have just had a look back at the others in the series and I think they're really good.

Les Auld: Thanks Ingrid, the idea was to provide an older feel to it, so I suppsoe i have suceeded a bit in this.
Nice muted colours here and I like the straight-on composition
Les Auld: Only way to take this one Mark, thanks for the comemnt.
