photoblog image The Fortified Barn

The Fortified Barn

As welll as Pillboxes, existing buildings along the Leeds Liverpool Canal were adapted to form part of Western Stop Line 14 during World War II.

The Downholland Cross barn guards the A5147 bridge over the canal.  A line of embrasures have been added just under the eves of the building and running around the corner on the left gable end of the barn. They are just visible as concrete coloured openings in this picture

You have brought us another intruiging bit of history Les we have never heard about. Thanks for a good picture and interesting information. Brian.
Les Auld: Thanks Brian, it was all new to me as well a few weeks ago, but once found I just had to go and find more.

On our coastal line in those days they have mounted enormous guns in bunkers to defend the coast line especially around harbours. Some still stand to my knowledge.

When I look at a picture like this and read your comment, I think about those gun placements where to my knowledge no angry shot was ever fired.

But what if the enemy did try to invade and the defenses were not up?

Great picture and blog.
Les Auld: The same the world over I suppose Louis, but if we did not have the defenses then we would really need them I imagine.
This really does have a dad's army feel to it Les.
Les Auld: I can just imagine them lining up out side the barn, wooden rifles in hand, thanks for the comment Bill.
