The Milestone

One Hundred and One and One Quarter Miles to Leeds, the other side says Twenty Nine Miles to Liverpool, obviously the Leeds Liverpool canal. A three hour trip by car, three days if you are lucky by boat.

Mileposts were required by law as the Board of Trade set the tolls along the canal in 1893 which necessitated the marking of all mile points along the canal. The Leeds Liverpool Canal Company installed mile, half mile and quarter mile posts along the length of the canal and these were used in calculating the tolls for carrying cargoes.

The exactness of calculating to the nearest 1/4 mile is unbelievable! Lovely, tranquil shot - there's something about canals that is really peaceful.

Les Auld: A Victorian GPS Ingrid, it is the exactness that gets me as well. Thanks for the comment.
I wonder why it wasn't put 11/4 miles further on?
Les Auld: There is, or at least was, another one there as well, thanks for the comment Bill.

I lived at the Leeds end of the canal for most of my childhood. fell in many times. I never really thought about the mile stones. I will from now on.
Les Auld: I haven't seen the other end, must go there one day. Thanks for the comment.
Another pleasant shot Les, I think I would find the three day cruise on the canal more enjoyable than the car journey.
Les Auld: Certainly more time to take pictures, thanks for the comment Brian.
