One Hundred and One and One Quarter Miles to Leeds, the other side says Twenty Nine Miles to Liverpool, obviously the Leeds Liverpool canal. A three hour trip by car, three days if you are lucky by boat.
Mileposts were required by law as the Board of Trade set the tolls along the canal in 1893 which necessitated the marking of all mile points along the canal. The Leeds Liverpool Canal Company installed mile, half mile and quarter mile posts along the length of the canal and these were used in calculating the tolls for carrying cargoes.
