man with a shovel

It is not all glamour for the volounteers on our Heritage Railways, they have to get down amongst the ashes at the end of the day. The fireman cleans out the smokebox of Stanier 8F 48182 after a hard days steaming on the Great Central Railway.

It never ceases to amaze me that people can have so much time and energy for bygones. While others hang around in the gyms and clubs.

Excellent picture.
Les Auld: Thanks Louis, the heritage arena would be so much the poorer without these volounteers.
I know exactly how he feels - we have a wood burning stove that needs the ashes removing from time to time. Mind you I don't need a shovel!

Great shot Les.
Les Auld: Thanks Mike, it's a dirty job but someone has to do it.
Great shot Les, and just down the road from me as well. Must get down there again shortly as they have 70013 nearl ready to steam and Tornado on the way in May.
Les Auld: Should be a couple of good weekend in May Brian, thanks for the comment.
I can almost smell it Les. Happy to say the Severn Valley is getting back on its' feet after the flood damage
Les Auld: The SVR is re-opening in April I believe, I am thinking of visiting but not sure yet. Thanks for the comment Bill.

Les Auld: Thanks Tim, appreciate the comment.
Lovely evocative shot ... shame about the blue tarpaulin ... Nip back and take it again from slightly more front on ... I'm sure the fireman will oblige ;-) richard
Les Auld: It was actually very bright blue so I did tome it down a bit, I suppose I could have gone a bit further, thanks for the comment.

Is THAT what that part of a steam train is for? You learn something new everyday.
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment Dave.
