photoblog image A grey morning at Ramsbottom

A grey morning at Ramsbottom

I must admit that steam trains are one of my favourite subjects, and even better when the picture can appear to be from the time that they ran on Britsh tracks for real.

This is BR Class 4MT, 76079 shutting steam off as it approaches Ramsbottom station with a train from Rawtenstall on the East Lancashire Railway. The locomotive was built in 1957 and only served a few years before it was withdrawn from use. It entered preservation in 1974 and has spent a lot of it's time on the ELR with forays out onto the mainline as well.

Fantastic photo Les.

As a child I was taken from either Manchester Exchange or Bury (cannnot remember which) to Blackburn by train. I remember us going through a long tunnel, and Ramsbottom being on the way. Is this the line I would have been on? Feels a bit like a Stephen Poliakoff drama doesn't it ;o) Mike
Les Auld: It is quite possible Max as this is the only line through Ramsbottom. Appreciate the comment.
Great train shot Les. You should get together with an old friend of mine at our local photographic society. He goes chasing trains and takes loads of pictures.
Les Auld: Thanks Bill, I'm afraid I have not done too much chasing this year.

Cracking photo Les - nice to see an action shot. I was over at NYM railway the other day but they only had diesels running. A return trip is in the diary! David.
Les Auld: Thanks David, appreciate the comment.
Nice grey train for a grey day.
Les Auld: Thanks Ian, sometimes a grey day is just fine.
Looks like a still from a Merchant Ivory movie.
Les Auld: Thanks David, appreciate the comment.
It is appraised that the trains and the locomotives are a passion for you. Your photographies with these subjects are magnificent!
Les Auld: One of my favourite subjects, does it show? Thanks Jose.
