photoblog image HMS Albion

HMS Albion

The Royal Navy Assault ship, HMS Albion, was in port this weekend. She was open to the public on the Saturday and the Falklands 25 Memorial service was held aboard on the Sunday.

I had seen this ship in port lastyear but did not have the chance to go aboard. This year was different, she is enormous inside, with four landing craft, helicopters and al sosrts of land vehicles aon the well deck. Difficult toget good pictures though. It seemed strange to be wandering around the ship with armed marines dotted about the decks, I did wonder whether the guns were loaded.

The pile of scrap metal in the background is just part of the two million tons that is exported from Liverpool every year, mainly to the far east.

I swear it is part of my Tyneside genetics, but I get very emotional about ships. This is a great shot. This HMS Albion was built in Barrow in Furness - the previous HMS Albion was built on the Tyne. I expect you know this, but the ship you have photographed is the ninth to carry the name HMS Albion. The ship's motto is "Fortiler, Fideliter, Feliciter (Boldly, Faithfully, Successfully)". (:o)
Les Auld: I konw just what you mean about ships, I can't go past the river without looking for a photograph to take. Perhaps it is still the idea that they travel to far away exotic places with strange sounding names.
This is the second time I have seen Albion in Liverpool. In the last year we also have had HMS Liverpool, HMS Manchester and HMS St Albans open to the public.
Excellent capture. These ships just ooze power and presence. All the best, Dave
Les Auld: Yu can feel the presence when you are on board, especially in the vast well deck with all the vehicles. Thanksfor the comment David.
Wow !! Es un barco impresionante. Parece que la fotografía esté tomada desde otro barco, en el agua.! smile

Wow! It is an impressive boat. It seems that the photography is taken from another boat, in the water! smile
Les Auld: Thanks Jose, it certainly is impressive, especialy when you see inside her. The photo was taken frm the dock road, through the fence, sometimes you get lucky and there is nothing in the way, sometimes you don't.
Impressive boat, your composition is just perfect !
Les Auld: very impressive indeed, thank Zeb.
