photoblog image Southport Beach

Southport Beach

The beach at sunset, obvious really!

the device in the foreground is an old tidal measuring device for when the tide came in much further up the beach. I'm not sure how it worked, maybe when you could not see it the tide was in, if you could see it then the tide was out. Partially covered then the tide is coming in or going out, who knows?

Good one there Les, held that detail together well against the sun.
Les Auld: Thanks Max, needed a bit of post processing to bring back some of the detail, it's amazing just how much detail raw files can hold in. I did try this an HDR but was not satisfied with the result, for some reason there were a large number of highly reflective bits on the beach, probably from razor shells, that caused the Photomatix a bit of a problem.
very well composed...a beautiful sight...
Les Auld: Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.
This perfect to my mind. excellent work. All the best, Dave
Les Auld: Thanks, not too bad for a bit of derelict ironmongery on the beach.

Great crispness, great colours of the sky, nice composition! And well spotted, I have never seen something like that before!
Les Auld: Appreciate the comment Monika, it is an unusual object, it must of had a real use at one time.

Hi Les. I have seen a shot of this before and wondered what it was. The suggestion that it is a tide gauge is interesting. I have tried to find out more about it, came across this link http://www.southportforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50365724
Les Auld: Alistair, that's the page that gave me the information on what it was, I've tried to find about more about the manufacturers, both Liverpool and Fleetwood and embossed on the thing but have had no luck yet.

Thanks for the comment though.
