The sun setting over the Wirral peninsular is reflected in the black stone of the memorial to those Chinese seamen that served in both world wars. The memorial is at the Pier Head and faces out over the River Mersey.
Many thousands of Chinese served with the Merchant Navy during World War II, under worse terms and conditions than their Europen counterparts, Many of them died as well. The pool of seamen was based in Liverpool.
At the end of the war many were forceably repatriated to Hong Kong, some leaving behind wives and families in Liverpool. A heartless act and a sad story.
After fighting for many years by the families of these men the memorial was finally unveilled in 2006
